Had events unfolded according to Dinakar Thoogudeepa’s original intentions, he might not have experienced an almost six-year hiatus between his last directorial venture, Life Jothe Ond Selfie, and his upcoming project, Royal. In 2016, Dinakar announced plans for a third film featuring his brother, Challenging Star Darshan, titled Sarvantaryaami, which was intended to mark Darshan’s 50th film as a lead actor. Unfortunately, this project did not materialize.

At that time, Dinakar expressed his intention to undertake an interim project based on a script written by his wife, Manasa, which resulted in Life Jothe Ond Selfie. Since then, he has only made one other announcement regarding a film with Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar, produced by Jayanna Films. Dinakar dedicated approximately a year and a half to developing a script that he claims excited Puneeth, as it was designed to be a full-fledged commercial entertainer, a genre the actor had rarely explored.

Following the untimely passing of Power Star Puneeth, the project was shelved, and Dinakar has yet to determine the fate of that script. Nevertheless, he is now back on course to collaborate with Darshan. The last film he directed featuring Darshan was Saarathi in 2011. Currently, as he promotes Royal, set to release on January 24, he is also developing two new projects—one to introduce his nephew and another for Darshan.

Dinakar notes that he now enjoys significantly greater creative freedom compared to his work on Saarathi. “Kaatera is the first film where Darshan did not have a significant action sequence in the climax, which the audience received positively. This experience has taught me that I need not confine myself to the traditional expectations of Darshan’s image as a commercial hero. Kaatera has instilled in me the confidence that audiences are open to seeing Darshan in a different light. My goal is to present him in either a role he has not previously undertaken or in a character that has never been seen before,” Dinakar remarked in a discussion with Kairam Vaashi.
