Diljit Dosanjh's highly anticipated film, Punjab '95, is experiencing yet another postponement. This film has already encountered numerous delays, and the latest setback follows the release of its teaser. Similar to Emergency, Punjab '95 faced significant challenges with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), resulting in 120 cuts. Although the film eventually secured a theatrical release date, that arrangement was short-lived. The current delay has prompted an apology from Diljit himself. Here are all the details you need to know.

Diljit Dosanjh issues apology for Punjab '95 delay without stating the reason

Diljit shared a message on his Instagram stories stating, "We sincerely apologize and regret to inform you that the release of the film Punjab '95, originally scheduled for February 7th, will be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances."

Punjab '95 delay after confirmed date announced in a teaser

The initial teaser for Punjab '95 was released recently on Friday, January 17. The team expressed their relief following the challenges they faced in bringing the film to fruition. With confidence in their project, they announced that Punjab '95, directed by Honey Trehan, is set to premiere in theaters on February 7.

CBFC previously ordered 120 cuts in Punjab '95

Punjab '95 faced significant delays with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), remaining under review for over a year. The board requested more than 120 edits to the film, prompting the producers to opt for an international release rather than debuting it in India.

However, upon the release of the teaser, Diljit announced that the film would be presented in its entirety without any cuts. He accompanied this announcement with the caption, "#ChallengeTheDarkness."

Why is Punjab '95 under CBFC scrutiny?

Punjab '95 has been under review by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for more than a year, since 2022, due to its sensitive subject matter. The film chronicles the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who was instrumental in revealing the unlawful killings of Sikh youths—approximately 25,000—by the state police during the militancy period in the early 1990s in post-independence Punjab. Khalra himself was later abducted, tortured, and ultimately murdered in his pursuit of justice. Six police officers were found guilty of his kidnapping and murder.

The film was presented to Khalra's family, who expressed their support for its release. His wife, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, has publicly criticized the CBFC's position, emphasizing that the family desires the film to be released without any modifications. Nevertheless, the struggle for its release continues, with no new date announced.
