Dil Raju Defends Game Changer Poster Controversy: 'We Have Weaknesses

Producer Dil Raju dropped two films this Sankranthi: Shankar’s Game Changer and Anil Ravipudi’s Sankranthiki Vasthunam. While the high-budget flick featuring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani didn’t quite hit the mark, the other movie with Venkatesh is raking in the cash. At a recent press conference, his remarks about flops being labeled as hits came back to bite him.
Dil Raju stands his ground
Raju held a press conference in Hyderabad on Saturday with some distributors to showcase the success of Sankranthiki Vasthunam. As reported by Sacnilk, the film, which was made on a modest budget, has raked in over ₹170 crore net in India since its release on January 14. The producers also stated that the film grossed over ₹276 crore worldwide within 13 days.
While discussing the film's success, Raju mentioned to the media, “Sankranthiki Vasthunam—we’ve talked about its success at various events before. Even when distributors take a hit, the industry tends to label films as hits without actually breaking even. But if you look at it regionally, you can see the losses. The landscape has shifted now. We often see 90% of films failing in this industry, but this one stands out.”
Things got a bit tense when Raju opened the floor for questions and was confronted about his claim that Game Changer made over ₹186 crore gross worldwide on its opening day. Sacnilk reported that it actually earned ₹80 crore on day one. Raju shot back, “What do you know about it?”
When the reporter asked if it was the production house that decided to claim that amount or if it was someone else, Raju replied, “I’ve already mentioned that we (producers) have some issues we can’t talk about. I admit that, right? Don’t you see how much the film has already made? So just do the math and check out the posters for the films now.”
Distributor L Venkateshwara Rao added that even if producers and distributors stretch the truth, the audience isn’t buying it. “They’re just laughing at our posters that boast about big box office numbers; everyone’s aware of it,” he said.
Here’s a fresh take on that: Reply to the Game Changer poster
Raju kept sharing updates on how well Sankranthiki Vastunnam was doing at the box office, but he stopped posting about Game Changer after the first day because of all the trolling he faced.
When people started accusing him of exaggerating the box office figures, Ram Gopal Varma jumped in to support him on X (formerly Twitter). He said, “I have no idea who’s spreading these ridiculously naive lies, but it definitely isn’t producer Dil Raju. He’s a down-to-earth realist and wouldn’t be involved in any kind of fraud.”
Game Changer, featuring Kiara Advani and SJ Suryah in the main roles, raked in ₹130 crore net in India and a total of ₹185.1 crore globally within just 18 days of its release.
