The 2005 film Sarkar stands as one of the most highly regarded works of director Ram Gopal Varma. This cinematic endeavour starred Amitabh Bachchan alongside his son, Abhishek Bachchan. The screenplay was crafted by Manish Gupta, and the film is categorized as a political crime thriller. Notably, Ram Gopal Varma disclosed that Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan were not his initial selections for the roles in Sarkar.

RGV reveals his first choices for Sarkar

In a discussion with Pinkvilla, Ram Gopal Varma disclosed that Sanjay Dutt and Naseeruddin Shah were his initial selections for the film Sarkar. He stated, "Indeed, Sanjay was intended to portray Abhishek’s character, while Naseeruddin Shah was slated for Amitabh’s role. The project Nayak did not materialize, leading to the creation of Sarkar. Had I proceeded with Nayak, irrespective of its success, Sarkar would not have come to fruition," RGV expressed.

The director reminisced about his work on a film titled Nayak during the time Sanjay Dutt was apprehended in connection with the 1993 blast case. While awaiting Sanjay's release, RGV produced an action comedy that performed well at the box office. Given the film's success, he opted to create another project in the same genre following Sanjay's return.

"Unfortunately, that subsequent film did not achieve the same level of success. If it had not been well-received, I would not have pursued it. However, due to its success, I proceeded with it. Ultimately, Nayak was put on hold, and the title was abandoned. It was a wonderful title, but the project never came to fruition," he disclosed.

About Sarkar franchise

Ram Gopal Varma initiated the Sarkar franchise with its inaugural film in 2005. Following the success of the first instalment, the sequel, Sarkar Raj, was launched in 2008. This second film was penned by Prashant Pandey and featured Aishwarya Rai in a significant role. The project was supported by RGV and Praveen Nischoi. After a gap of seven years, the third instalment, titled Sarkar 3, made its debut in theatres. The cast included notable actors such as Jackie Shroff, Amit Sadh, and Manoj Bajpayee, among others.
