The 2019 ZEE5 web series Kaafir, a significant milestone in Dia Mirza's acting career, has now been re-released in its original film format. Initially envisioned as a movie, the project was later adapted for streaming. It tells the poignant story of a Kashmiri woman imprisoned in India while living under Pakistani occupation.
Dia Mirza on Kaafir's long journey
In a conversation with Mid Day, Dia Mirza shared that the project faced a prolonged hiatus after its initial conception as a film. Eventually, ZEE5 showed interest in transforming it into a series, prompting writer Bhavani Iyer to make revisions. With its current availability as a film, the actress reflected on what aspects would remain, acknowledging the fortunate circumstances that allowed the production to revert to its original form.
Kaafir aligns seamlessly with Mirza's diverse and evolving filmography, which includes titles such as Thappad (2020), Dhak Dhak (2023), and the thriller IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack (2024). However, the actress candidly discusses the challenges of obtaining roles that possess such significant depth.
Dia Mirza on Dhak Dhak
For Mirza, Dhak Dhak felt like a declaration that reshaped her expectations for her 40s. As she contemplated her career path and the limited opportunities historically available to women in the industry after a certain age, she admitted that she had been led to believe that she would fade into obscurity by her 40s.
Mirza contends that while OTT platforms have created more opportunities for female actors, she still finds a scarcity of roles that possess depth. Although OTT has opened doors for female characters, Dhak Dhak stands out as one of the few narratives that truly resonate. She emphasizes that identifying the right projects often requires significant effort and can sometimes be a blow to one's ego, leading her to decline more offers than she accepts.
Dia Mirza on Nadaaniyan getting trolled
Nadaaniyan is Mirza's latest film, featuring her alongside rising stars Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor. In light of the online harassment faced by young actors, she expressed a compassionate perspective shaped by her own experiences.
Having faced intense criticism in her early career, albeit without the presence of social media, she understands the profound effects of personal attacks. The only advantage she had at that time was her title as a beauty queen. Reflecting on the harsh scrutiny she faced, she acknowledged that, apart from her title, she lacked a support system.
