Dia Mirza's 2019 series Kaafir, featuring Mohit Raina, has now been adapted into a film. In it, Dia portrays an innocent Pakistani woman who inadvertently crosses the Line of Control and finds herself in India. Recently, she shared her thoughts on a specific rape scene from the series that deeply affected her.

In the film, Dia takes on the character of Kainaaz Akhtar, who is unjustly imprisoned with her daughter, who was born while she was incarcerated. In a conversation with CNN-News 18, she talked about how challenging it was to film the rape scene, both physically and emotionally.

I was trembling all over

I recall how tough it was to film the rape scene; it really took a toll on me. After we wrapped up, I was physically shaking and even ended up throwing up. That’s how intense and draining those moments were. When you fully immerse yourself in the reality of that scene, it hits you hard. You really feel every bit of it, the actress shared.

Dia, 43, pointed out that for an artist, connecting with the character is crucial for delivering a genuine and powerful performance.

“For me, the key to being an artist is to have empathy for the character you’re portraying. It’s essential to stay true to the story and everything it encompasses. Playing Kainaaz made me feel like a mother long before I actually became one. The intensity, love, and protectiveness I felt for her during the show were incredibly strong,” Dia explained.

Kaafir tells the true story of Shehnaaz Parveen, a Pakistani woman who was imprisoned in India for eight years after accidentally crossing the Line of Control. The film features Mohit Raina as a journalist determined to fight for justice for Kainaaz Akhtar, who faces a challenging ordeal while incarcerated.
