Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood with the film Abir Gulal has encountered challenges following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. In the midst of this situation, Dia Mirza’s comments endorsing his return, shared during an interview with News18, attracted significant attention. The actress has since clarified that her remarks were made prior to the incident.

Dia Mirza responds to criticism regarding her support for Fawad's return to Bollywood

Dia Mirza took to Instagram and wrote a message explaining that her supportive statement for Fawad was made well before the terrorist attack. She stated, “To Members of the Media, STOP misrepresentation of facts. I did an interview for a film of mine on the 10th of April, in which I gave a quote, long before this horrific terror attack. Stop circulating my quotes NOW, weeks after and out of context. This is unethical and deeply offensive. ”

Dia Mirza's remark that captured attention

For those unfamiliar, in the promotional interview for her film, Dia had voiced her support for Fawad’s return to Bollywood, asserting that art and animosity should remain separate. “This is a political matter. If the conditions for banning artists were entirely. . . I’ve always believed that art is, and should remain, a vehicle for peace and harmony. We must never permit art and sport to be entwined with hatred. It’s simply positive that Fawad is back in the film—you know we will be seeing it soon. I hope this opens the door for many more collaborative opportunities,” she had remarked.

On 22 April, a horrific terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam deeply affected the nation. Up to 26 civilians lost their lives in the attack, and many more sustained injuries. Shortly thereafter, Fawad’s film Abir Gulal encountered criticism, with numerous individuals calling for the film’s release to be prevented. On Wednesday, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) made requests to hinder the film’s release. In a statement following the Pahalgam attack, FWICE declared a “total non-cooperation with all Pakistani artists, singers, and technicians within the Indian film and entertainment industry,” and also committed to “taking all necessary actions to ensure that Abir Gulal is not released in India. ”

Exhibitors are hesitant to take on the film, apprehensive of backlash. “The production house is attempting to negotiate with them, but it seems improbable that Abir Gulal will debut on 9 May for the time being. The film’s release may be delayed until the situation is resolved. However, when that might happen is uncertain, as theatres are unwilling to showcase a film featuring a Pakistani actor at this moment,” stated the source.
