Actor Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, is currently engaged in a civil lawsuit seeking damages amounting to ₹1 crore for copyright infringement related to the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, as reported by Times Now. The affidavit submitted for the lawsuit accuses director Vignesh Shivan of unprofessional conduct, asserting that he was primarily focused on actress Nayanthara.

Dhanush’s production house seeks ₹1 crore in damages

Wunderbar Films is claiming ₹1 crore in damages from Nayanthara and Vignesh for allegedly utilizing behind-the-scenes footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in their Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, without obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

The affidavit from the actor-director alleges a lack of professionalism, stating, “The fourth respondent (Mr. Sivan) unnecessarily directed his attention solely towards the third respondent (Ms. Nayanthara), neglecting the other cast and crew members by insisting on multiple re-takes of scenes featuring her, thereby ensuring her performance was prioritized over that of the other actors.”

This development follows the Madras High Court's refusal to grant an interim injunction, as the docu-drama was released on November 18 of the previous year. The court has scheduled the main suit for a hearing on April 9.

Live Law reported the court's statement, “It is acknowledged by both parties that the documentary has been available for viewing since November 18, 2024. Without prejudice to the arguments presented in the interim application, the plaintiff is prepared to advance the suit based on its merits. Consequently, OA 958 of 2024 is concluded without any further orders.”

The tiff between Nayanthara and Dhanush

Nayanthara and Vignesh developed a romantic relationship while working on the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan and expressed a desire to incorporate scenes from the movie into their docu-series. Their conflict became widely known on November 16 of the previous year when Nayanthara publicly addressed Dhanush in an open letter, criticizing him for failing to provide the necessary No Objection Certificate despite their numerous requests. She further alleged that she utilized footage captured on personal devices for the documentary. Although Dhanush has not made a public statement regarding the matter, he has initiated legal proceedings against the couple and Netflix.
