Television personality Dhanashree Verma and cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal have appeared before the Bombay High Court. The estranged couple is currently awaiting the court's ruling on their divorce petition.
As they arrived at the court, photographers captured Dhanashree and Yuzvendra dressed in casual attire, concealing their identities with face masks and sunglasses. They hurried into the courtroom without engaging with the press.
What's happening at court today?
On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court expedited the divorce-by-mutual consent petition filed by Chahal and his estranged wife, allowing them to bypass the mandatory six-month cooling-off period.
Justice Madhav Jamdar instructed the Bandra family court to resolve the couple's divorce petition by March 20, as the cricketer would be unavailable after March 21 due to his commitments in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Yuzvendra Chahal and Verma submitted a joint petition to the High Court requesting the waiver of the cooling-off period, citing their mutual consent for divorce. The petition, represented by advocate Nitin Gupta, also sought a prompt decision from the family court regarding their divorce.
The couple contested a family court ruling from February 20 that denied their request to waive the cooling-off period. According to the Hindu Marriage Act, couples are required to observe a six-month cooling-off period before a divorce can be finalized, intended to allow for potential reconciliation.
In granting relief to the couple, Justice Jamdar acknowledged that "petitioner No. 1" (Chahal) would be engaged in the IPL and might not be available after March 21, as indicated by his attorney. The High Court therefore requested that the family court address their divorce application by March 20.
What is the divorce case?
The IPL T20 cricket tournament is set to commence on March 22. Chahal is a member of the Punjab Kings team. He and Dhanashree Verma were married in December 2020, but they separated in June 2022, as indicated in their petition. On February 5, they jointly submitted a petition to the family court requesting a divorce by mutual consent.
The high court acknowledged that Chahal and Verma had been living apart for over two and a half years and confirmed that the terms agreed upon during mediation regarding alimony payments had been adhered to.
The family court, however, declined to waive the cooling-off period, citing only partial compliance with the consent terms, which stipulated that Chahal was to pay ₹4.75 crore to Dhanashree. The court noted that he had only paid ₹2.37 crore. Additionally, a report from the marriage counsellor indicated that there had been partial compliance with the mediation process.
Nevertheless, the high court ruled on Wednesday that there had been compliance with the consent terms, as the second instalment of permanent alimony was contingent upon the finalization of the divorce decree. "There are no obstacles in the facts and circumstances of this case that would prevent the approval of the petition. Therefore, the family court's order is hereby quashed," stated the high court.
