Pavail Gulati recently appeared alongside Shahid Kapoor in the film Deva. Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, this cop drama premiered in theatres on January 31, 2025, and received a variety of reviews. Viewers familiar with the film are aware that its climax was altered. In a recent interview with a tabloid, Pavail explained the reasons behind the differences in the climax compared to Prithviraj Sukumaran's 2013 Malayalam film, Mumbai Police.
Pavail Gulati on changes in Deva's climax
In an interview with Mid-Day, Pavail Gulati discussed the reactions he received regarding the climax of Deva. The actor stated, "The feedback is subjective; I received calls expressing, ‘We loved the climax,’ while others found it somewhat lacking. I appreciated the climax, where the protagonist also embodies the antagonist."
The climax of the Malayalam film revealed that the protagonist is gay, while the conclusion of the Shahid Kapoor film depicted his character, Dev Ambre, as an anti-hero.
When Pavail inquired about the reluctance of Hindi cinema to portray its leading man as gay, he responded, "It is not accurate to say that the Hindi film audience or the industry is unprepared for such characters. Rajkummar Rao's portrayal of a gay police officer in Badhaai Do [2022] was met with widespread acclaim. I believe the filmmakers aimed to reimagine the narrative."
Gulati further elaborated that it took him some time to grasp the extensive scale of Deva. He remarked that the stylized approach to filmmaking was 'novel for him.' Nevertheless, he regards Rosshan Andrrews as a master in this style and considers him his 'guru,' referring to himself as his 'perfect chela.'
