A Bangladeshi national named Shariful Fakir, who was apprehended for assaulting actor Saif Ali Khan, allegedly resorted to criminal activity due to severe financial hardship. According to a report by the Times of India, Shariful intended to commit theft and "flee to Bangladesh with the stolen goods to assist his sick mother." The incident occurred in the early hours of January 16, when Saif was repeatedly stabbed by the assailant at his residence. The actor sustained multiple stab wounds during the attack and required emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital. He was released from the hospital on Tuesday.

Why accused want to escape to Bangladesh after stealing

A police officer was quoted by TOI stating that the individual selected Saif's residence at random. His primary intention was to rob a wealthy individual and flee to Bangladesh with the stolen goods to assist his sick mother. The catalyst for this criminal act was Shariful's loss of a housekeeping position at a restaurant in Thane on December 15, coinciding with the conclusion of the contract with the manpower agency operated by Jitendra Pandey. Consequently, he found himself in a dire financial situation, as he indicated.

About Shariful

Shariful was previously employed at a restaurant in Worli before he began working at the Thane restaurant in September of the previous year. He reported to the police during questioning that he earned ₹13,000 monthly, of which he sent ₹12,000 to Bangladesh to support his mother's medical care. In August, he was apprehended for theft, resulting in the termination of his employment. Subsequently, he secured a low-skilled position at the Thane restaurant.

How Shariful entered Saif's Mumbai home

Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, also known as Vijay Das, aged 30, unlawfully entered Saif's residence located in the Bandra district of Mumbai by climbing over the compound wall. At that moment, the security personnel were reportedly asleep, according to police statements made on Tuesday. Three days following the incident, law enforcement apprehended the suspect in the adjacent city of Thane.

More about the case

On Tuesday, the Mumbai Police conducted a reconstruction of the crime scene involving the suspect at the Satguru Sharan building, where the actor resides. According to a police official, the authorities escorted the accused to the actor's residence as well as to various locations he may have frequented for meals, changing clothes, and boarding a train, as reported by the news agency PTI.

Police Inspector (Crime) Ajay Lingnurkar has been designated as the investigation officer for this case, the official confirmed. The suspect, Fakir, originally from the Jhalokathi district in Bangladesh, had been living in Mumbai for more than five months, engaged in various odd jobs and affiliated with a housekeeping agency, according to police statements. A Mumbai court has placed the accused in five-day police custody as of Sunday.
