Deepika Padukone recently featured in the most recent episode of Pariksha Pe Charcha, a program initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at raising awareness regarding mental health. The actress candidly discussed her struggle with depression and shared insights on how she managed to overcome it.

Deepika on battling depression

In the course of the episode, Deepika reflected on her experiences with suicidal thoughts and her desire to end her life. She stated, “I moved through various phases, starting from school to sports, then to modeling, and ultimately to acting. I continuously pushed my limits until, in 2014, I unexpectedly collapsed. It was only afterward that I recognized I was grappling with depression. One of the challenges of depression is its invisibility; it is not always apparent. There may be individuals around us who are contending with anxiety or depression, yet we might remain unaware, as they often appear outwardly happy and normal.”

How Deepika's mom helped her

The actress disclosed that she had refrained from discussing her emotions for an extended period and lived in solitude in Mumbai. She subsequently mentioned that her mother identified the warning signs and provided support during a time when mental health issues were significantly stigmatized in society.

She recounted, “On the day my mother was departing for Bangalore after visiting me in Mumbai, I unexpectedly broke down. My family posed numerous questions regarding my career, but all I could express was, ‘I don’t know. I just feel helpless and hopeless. I don’t want to live.’ Fortunately, my mother recognized the signs and recommended that I consult a psychologist. In our nation, mental health is often stigmatized, which complicates open discussions. However, once I began to articulate my feelings, I felt a sense of relief. Anxiety, stress, and depression can impact anyone, and discussing these issues genuinely alleviates the burden.”

Deepika has been a fervent supporter of mental health awareness through her Live Love Laugh Foundation. In addition to sharing her own struggles with mental illness, she has also provided children with strategies to combat depression.
