Ever since Kannada superstar Darshan was arrested as a murder accused in June this year, he’s repeatedly made requests to the court for home-cooked food, which were subsequently quashed. These requests, though, are now seen as a complete eye-wash to create an impression that he was not getting any special treatment within the jail premises, when, in actuality, he was enjoying life as usual.
An undated photo of Darshan hanging out with a known rowdy-sheeter, while having a cigarette and a beverage has gone viral, prompting questions if the actor is even at the Parappana Agrahara. As an immediate reaction, as many as 9 jail authorities have been suspended, with further investigations launched as to how the actor got access to items that are otherwise barred for inmates. It is being alleged that officials have recovered as many as 15 boxes with empty liquor bottles and cigarette packs from the prison.
Following the appearance of this photo, a screen recording of the actor on a video call with one of his aides has also been floated in the public space. Questions have arisen as to how the actor had access to a phone with network, given that there are jammers all across the prison premises. It is also being heard that the Karnataka government is now looking at shifting the actor out of Parappana Agrahara to prevent any such lapses. Belagavi or Ballari is where Darshan is likely to be shifted shortly.
The Home Minister G Parameshwara has gone on record saying that there has been a lapse on the part of prison officials. Incidentally, Parappana Agrahara is the same prison where Sasikala was rumoured to have received VIP treatment during her 4-year stint in Bengaluru.
Darshan is currently an undertrial in the murder case of Chitradurga-resident Renukaswamy, a fan of the actor, who allegedly sent obscene messages to the former’s partner Pavitra Gowda. Renukaswamy was brutally tortured and succumbed to his injuries later.
