Cynthia Erivo is riding high on the success of her recent film Wicked, which has not only earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress but also racked up a whopping 10 nominations overall, including Best Picture. However, the snub of director Jon M. Chu in the Best Director category is still bothering her. In a chat with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, she opened up about her feelings on that oversight.

Cynthia's take on the snub

Cynthia shared her thoughts during the chat when asked why Jon M. Chu didn’t make the top five. She said, "Honestly, I have no idea. I just wish people realized how much effort goes into bringing a massive production like Wicked to life. None of it would be possible without his vision. He’s the one who knows who’s perfect for these roles, who requested nine million tulips, and who insists on building a real set to make it feel authentic. It’s all him! He wants the camera right in Elphaba’s face as she walks down the steps in the Ozdust Ballroom. You really need a special kind of vision to manage something that could easily spiral out of control if you’re not careful."

She added, "I truly believe he’s an amazing director. The way he selects the right people for each department shows his incredible skill."
