Controversy Erupts Over ‘Abir Gulaal’ – MNS Leader Declares Ban in Maharashtra!

Actors Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor are poised to appear together in the film Abir Gulaal, and a teaser released on Tuesday has sparked considerable excitement. While fans are looking forward to Fawad's return to Indian cinemas, the film is already encountering some challenges. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has voiced its opposition to the film's release in Maharashtra.
Fawad's comeback to Indian theaters is facing hurdles. Following the teaser's release, MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar stated, according to Danik Bhaskar, that they are against the film being screened in Maharashtra.
"We learned about the release of this film only today, when the filmmakers made the announcement. However, we want to make it clear that we will not permit this film to be released in Maharashtra due to the involvement of a Pakistani actor. Under no circumstances will we allow such films to be shown in Maharashtra. We are currently gathering more information regarding this film and will subsequently issue a comprehensive statement," Ameya was quoted as saying.
Additionally, the same report included comments from Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam regarding the film.
He said, “When a film is released from Pakistan, Indian people do not like to watch it. It is a different thing to watch one or two films for a minute, but the films of Pakistani artists do not become very popular among the Indian audience. That is why Pakistani stars have never been able to succeed in India. I would advise Pakistanis that instead of exploring the Indian market, it is better to work in their own country. If the central government has made a policy, it should be implemented. I believe that the government should decide whether Pakistani films should be allowed to come to India or not. Whether Pakistani artists should be allowed to work in India or not should also be the government's decision."
Abir Gulaal teaser unveiled
On Tuesday, a teaser for Abir Gulaal was unveiled, featuring Fawad and Vaani's characters inside a car. The footage depicts Fawad performing "Kuch Naa Kaho" from the film 1942: A Love Story while he and Vaani relish the rain. Upon completing the song, Vaani inquires, "Are you flirting with me?" to which Fawad responds, "Do you want me to?" The teaser concludes with the phrase, "Bringing love back."
What we know about Abir Gulaal?
Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi and produced by Indian Stories and A Richer Lens in collaboration with Aarjay Pictures, Abir Gulaal signifies Fawad's return to Hindi cinema after a nine-year hiatus. In 2016, an unofficial ban was imposed on Pakistani artists in Indian films due to political tensions between the two nations. However, in 2023, the Bombay High Court rejected a petition aimed at formally prohibiting Pakistani artists from working in India.
The film's synopsis describes Abir Gulaal as a touching narrative set against the charming backdrop of London, weaving a love story rich with unexpected twists, heartfelt moments, and enchanting experiences. Viewers can look forward to a delightful mix of humor, emotional scenes, and the undeniable chemistry between Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor. The film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 9.
