Comparing Violence: Marco vs. Animal—Netizens Weigh In
3 hours ago | 5 Views
Regarded as the most violent Indian film to date, the latest release from Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan, titled Marco, has certainly met the expectations set by its promotion. Directed by Haneef Adeni, the film has reportedly earned over Rs 35 crore globally, establishing itself as one of the most intense and brutal action films produced in the industry. Some critics have even suggested that its level of violence rivals that of certain South Korean films within the same genre.
Discussions among netizens have emerged across various social media platforms, where comparisons are being drawn between Marco and other recent Indian films, such as Sandeep Vanga Reddy and Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Lakshya and Raghav Juyal’s Kill, as well as Thalapathy Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo. These conversations aim to determine which film holds the title of the most violent in India in recent years.
Animal is nothing in front of Marco: Twitter users say
Unni Mukundan's film Marco centers on a troubled and aggressive young man who embarks on a quest for vengeance following the murder of his brother. The film is noted for its exceptionally graphic violence, arguably among the most disturbing in Malayalam cinema, if not in Indian cinema as a whole, showcasing scenes of dismemberment involving both animals and humans, as well as the brutal slaying of women and children.
This has led to comparisons with the blockbuster Animal featuring Ranbir Kapoor and directed by Sandeep Vanga Reddy, with numerous viewers expressing a preference for Unni Mukundan's work over the Bollywood production.
Animal still holds the crown, say some users
Some social media users still favoured Animal, for its engaging storyline and big-screen experience that Marco lacked. Though they agreed that Marco had some brutal scenes, the intensity and emotional highs required for such films to truly connect with the audience even after leaving the theatres was missing in the Unni Mukundan-starrer, which grossed over Rs 35 Cr worldwide after Day 3, as per Twitter users.
Unni Mukundan pledges to do more action films
The debate over which film is more violent may continue, but the success of these productions undoubtedly indicates that more will follow. While these films may not cater to those with a delicate disposition, action movies have consistently attracted a substantial audience in the country.
In a recent media interaction, Unni Mukundan expressed his desire to pursue more action films, stating, "It's a genre that resonates with the youth." He emphasized his dedication to creating exceptional action films and expressed his satisfaction with his work on Marco.
Marco has already achieved a revenue of Rs 2.2 Cr from the rest of the Indian market within its first three days of release. As positive word of mouth circulates, fans are optimistic about the film's potential to reach tier 3 centers in the North, provided that distributors make it accessible. In the North, Marco will face significant competition from Varun Dhawan's Baby John, another action film that is a remake of the Tamil movie Theri, featuring Thalapathy Vijay. Notably, Marco includes several scenes, particularly in its climactic stunt sequences, that may evoke memories of Vijay's Leo.
