Amazon's bold venture into the spy genre, Citadel, seems to be approaching its finale. Rumors had been prevalent for several weeks, but on April 16, Amazon confirmed the cancellation of its Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana Italian spin-offs. Each of these series has completed just one season.

Season 2 of US Citadel set for 2026

As In other news, Amazon has announced that the second season of the US mothership series, featuring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, is set to premiere in 2026. However, Mid Day has recently reported that this upcoming season may be the final installment of Citadel. It appears that there will be no additional spin-offs in Japan, Mexico, or Spain.

According to sources, the initial plan was to launch the Italian, Indian, and Mexican adaptations of Citadel following the first season of the US version. If the storyline allowed, the second season of the US series was intended to be released between these adaptations; otherwise, it would conclude the series after the spin-offs in Japan and Spain. Nevertheless, the Mexican adaptation is no longer under consideration, and the future of the branches originating from Spain and Japan remains uncertain.

Amazon's Citadel, one of its most expensive and intricate undertakings, was envisioned as a multi-national franchise by the Russo Brothers. The aim of this interconnected global series is to expand the Citadel universe through concurrent narratives set in various regions around the world.

Amazon teases an action-packed second season

According to Amazon's official announcement, the storylines of the Indian and Italian adaptations will not proceed independently; instead, they will be integrated into the overarching narrative of the second season. The plots of Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be intertwined in the upcoming second season of the main series, Citadel, following their successful journeys in Italy and India.

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, stated that Season 2 of Citadel is set to be their most thrilling installment yet, despite the fact that the successful international chapters will not be developed as standalone series.

Sources familiar with the situation revealed that the original concept included characters from the now-cancelled Mexican version; however, Amazon opted not to provide further comments on this matter.

Clarification on Citadel: Honey Bunny's status

An additional source has disclosed to the tabloid that the Indian adaptation featuring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu was never officially cancelled. In fact, a second season of the Raj & DK series, known for Go Goa Gone, was never planned. Had it been developed, it would have followed the release of the US version and its various spin-offs by a significant margin.

There are speculations that the second season was intended to serve as the final chapter of the global saga, particularly since Priyanka is believed to have a two-season contract for the US version.

With the cancellation of Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana, along with their proposed Mexican, Spanish, and Japanese spin-offs, fans are now anticipating that Amazon will conclude its fragmented spy universe in the series finale set for 2026.
