Murphy received the Best Actor award at last year's Oscars for his role in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. This year, he returned to the stage to present the same accolade. He expressed his admiration for all the nominees, stating, “I believe I represent the sentiments of everyone here when I express my awe at the performances of these five Best Actor nominees, who consistently made the right choices.”

It appears that he had a particular admiration for Brody, as lip reader Jeremy Freeman noted Murphy's whispered compliment to the Best Actor winner during their embrace on stage. Freeman reported that the Peaky Blinders actor remarked, “Man, you're bl***y brilliant,” as noted by The Mirror US.

Following this exchange, Brody proceeded to give an extended acceptance speech, despite being interrupted twice by the orchestral music. As reported by the Irish Star, he responded, “Please turn the music off. I've done this before,” assuring the audience that he would be “egregious” with the remainder of his remarks. Brody concluded with, “It's not my first rodeo.”
