In a recent interview, actor Chum Darang expressed her views on the necessity for greater inclusivity within the film industry and the nation as a whole towards individuals from the North East. During her conversation with BBC India, she reflected on her experiences with racism after relocating to Mumbai from Arunachal Pradesh, noting that she has developed a 'thicker skin' over the years.
Chum Darang on being called racist names
Chum reminisced about her arrival in Mumbai in 2018, filled with aspirations and anticipation for the city's many offerings. However, her initial encounter with racism occurred shortly thereafter during a visit to a mall. She noted that the situation worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, as individuals began to unjustly attribute blame to "her country" for the outbreak.
She expressed, “Young boys at the mall hurled insults at me, and I was at a loss for how to respond. I simply shot them a glance and walked away. They referred to me as momo and chow chow. I fail to understand why they think that by labeling me with a Chinese name based on my appearance, I would be offended. All I wish is for the people of this country to recognize that we belong here as well. Although we may look different, I am an Indian too.”
On the change that needs to come in films
Chum has appeared in productions such as Badhaai Do, Gangubai Kathiawadi, and Paatal Lok season 1 over the years. However, she emphasizes the need for the film industry to create more substantial roles for individuals from the North East. She highlighted the challenges they face in securing lead roles, regardless of their talent.
“It is quite clear that the roles available to us are not being developed as they should be. There are very few opportunities, making it difficult to obtain lead positions. Nevertheless, we are persevering, and changes are occurring. Living in Bombay is quite costly. I took on a role in Paatal Lok as a Chinese infomercial girl out of necessity for financial support. However, I later realized that I am destined for greater opportunities,” she remarked.
Recently, Chum participated in the reality television show Bigg Boss 18, where she finished as the fourth runner-up. Additionally, she publicly addressed Elvish Yadav regarding his racist remarks about her in a YouTube video.
