Last month, Netflix's Adolescence unexpectedly took the spotlight and quickly became a hit. This four-episode series centers on a teenager facing murder charges and garnered fantastic reviews right from the start, especially for its impressive one-shot filming style. In a special chat with Hindustan Times, actress Christine Tremarco, who portrays Manda Miller, the mother of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper), shared her thoughts on the incredible feedback from viewers.

Feedback from actual parents

The actress reveals that since the show's debut, she's been approached by many parents who want to share their thoughts. “In my hometown of Liverpool, I've had both men and women, who are parents, come up to me and say, 'Thank you! Thanks to Stephen [Graham, her co-star], and everyone involved in the show!’ They mentioned how the show has raised awareness about toxic masculinity and inspired them to have deeper conversations with their kids. It’s not just about internet safety; they feel motivated to engage with their children more overall. A few have even expressed that it made them reflect on their own parenting and past mistakes. So, it’s sparked discussions that go beyond the main theme of our story.”

It was a bittersweet joy during the shoot

Reflecting on his time working on the show alongside co-stars Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, and Erin Doherty, the actor shared, “It was a real privilege to receive the script and see who I’d be working with. Just that alone felt like an honor. The shoot was incredible—both heartbreaking and joyful, thanks to the amazing cast and crew. Seeing it released and connecting with audiences has truly been a privilege to be part of that journey.”

About the one-shot technique

The show has garnered a lot of buzz for its impressive one-shot filming technique. It's a remarkable technical feat, with the camera seamlessly following the characters, even capturing them inside a vehicle. In one particularly long sequence towards the end of the second episode, it transitions from one location to another without any cuts.

Christine shares her thoughts on the shooting style, saying, “For me, shooting in one take is such a fantastic way to work. It gives actors so much freedom. We had an incredible crew, all under the guidance of the talented director Philip Barantini. In episode 4, especially, when our characters are trying to maintain a sense of normalcy, it starts in one place and then shifts through this van as they navigate what happens with the kid. That backward journey really stuck with me. It captured the reality of their experience in a unique way. It was something else!”
