Filmmaker Atlee recently made a guest appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, hosted by Kapil Sharma. However, a joke delivered by Kapil has ignited controversy, leading numerous viewers to speculate whether the comedian was making an inappropriate remark regarding Atlee's appearance. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has since expressed her views on the matter, condemning Kapil for purportedly making a joke about Atlee's skin tone.
What happened
Director Atlee made an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show on Saturday to promote his forthcoming film, Baby John. He participated in the grand finale episode alongside the film's cast, which included Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi.
During the discussion, Kapil made a light-hearted joke about Atlee that was not well received by some social media users. He inquired, “When you meet a star for the first time, do they ask, where is Atlee?”
In response, Atlee stated, “I somewhat understood your question, and I will attempt to address it. I am genuinely grateful to AR Murugadoss sir for producing my debut film. He requested a script without considering my appearance or whether I was capable. However, he appreciated my narration. I believe the world should witness that. Judgments should not be based on looks; they should come from the heart.”
A clip from the episode circulated on social media, leading to backlash against Kapil for his comments. Both the comedian and Atlee have yet to respond to the controversy.
Chinmayi Sripaada responds assertively.
Chinmayi expressed her disapproval of the joke without hesitation, directly addressing Kapil. She utilized X, previously known as Twitter, to articulate her thoughts.
In a repost of a segment from the show, Chinmayi remarked, “Will they never cease these crude and racist remarks regarding his skin color under the guise of ‘comedy’?”
She further stated, “It is disheartening and, regrettably, not unexpected for someone as influential as Kapil Sharma to make such comments.”
Several fans of the Jawan director expressed their dissatisfaction with the comment and voiced their disappointment on social media platforms.
One user on Twitter stated, “I viewed this episode earlier today and had the same thought. Perhaps his intention was not negative, but he should have articulated the question in a much more appropriate manner. Nevertheless, he is known for promoting body shaming, so this reaction is not unexpected.”
Another user commented, “While Kapil Sharma may be a decent individual in other respects, he frequently makes jokes that are racist, sexist, body-shaming, and homophobic on his show. His thoughtless question to Atlee highlights the obsession with fair skin prevalent among North Indians.”
