A recent update regarding the film Chhaava has emerged, and it may disappoint many viewers. Laxman Utekar announced that the film will not include a Lezim dance featuring Sambhaji Maharaj, portrayed by Vicky Kaushal, and his wife, Maharani Yesubai, played by Rashmika Mandanna. This decision was made during a discussion with Raj Thackeray, the leader of the MNS. In an official statement to the media, Utekar emphasized that the heritage of the Maratha monarch holds paramount importance, and the decision was primarily related to a dance sequence.
Laxman Utekar's relationship with Raj Thackeray and influence on film decisions
Laxman Utekar's connection with Raj Thackeray has evidently influenced his filmmaking choices. Kaushal embodies the legendary Maratha warrior in Chhaava, which recently premiered its trailer in Mumbai. According to India Today, Utekar acknowledged his relationship with Thackeray, noting the politician's passion for knowledge and extensive reading. Consequently, the director has taken Thackeray's insights and suggestions to heart. Following their meeting, Utekar decided to exclude the scenes featuring Sambhaji Maharaj in the Lezim dance.
Utekar further clarified that the dance sequence involving Vicky Kaushal and Mandanna will not be included in the final version of the film, asserting that the Lezim dance is not a significant aspect of the narrative. He stated that Sambhaji Maharaj's legacy far surpasses the importance of such a dance. Thus, the film will omit these particular scenes.
Chhaava is an adaptation of the novel by Shivaji Sawant, focusing on the life and reign of Sambhaji Maharaj, who ascended as Chhatrapati, highlighting his valor and governance. Utekar shared his vision of portraying Sambhaji as a youthful figure of 20 years.
Decision to remove Lezim dance based on cultural sensitivity
The decision to eliminate the Lezim dance due to cultural sensitivity has been articulated by Utekar. He stated, "Sambhaji Maharaj was merely 20 years old when he initiated an assault on Barhanpur. We have acquired the rights to Shivaji Sawant's book, Chhava, which details Sambhaji Maharaj's participation in the Holi festival, where he would extract a coconut from the sacred fire. We envisioned Maharaj as a young man of 20, and it is evident that he would have engaged in the Lezim dance. After all, Lezim is an integral aspect of Maratha culture; it is simply our traditional dance. However, if the dance movements or the Lezim itself cause any offense, we will remove them. The significance of the Lezim dance does not surpass that of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj."
Furthermore, the filmmaker has taken into account the opinions of various ministers from Maharashtra and emphasized the importance of having historians review the film prior to its release. Utekar has announced a distinctive premiere performance scheduled for January 29, which will be attended by historians and enthusiasts of history, whose recommendations will be heeded.
Chhaava release date
Utekar has confirmed that Chhaava is set to be released as planned on February 14, 2025.
