Blue Origin faced criticism following its recent space launch featuring a high-profile crew, including Lauren Sanchez and Katy Perry, which lasted 11 minutes on Monday. While the flight was celebrated as the first all-female space crew in more than six decades, celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski and Amy Schumer voiced their disapproval on social media, accusing the aerospace company and its crew of "destroying the planet" and squandering resources on a commercial space venture.
Emily Ratajkowski claims that Blue Origin is harming the planet
Ratajkowski shared her thoughts in a TikTok video about this morning's space mission, calling it "end time stuff" and saying, "It's beyond parody." She pointed out the irony of caring for Mother Earth while traveling in a spaceship funded by a company that's harming the planet.
The 33-year-old model encouraged her 2.7 million followers to "consider the state of the world" and reflect on the resources spent to send these women into space. "For what? What was the marketing behind that?" she questioned, expressing her feelings of disgust.
Amy Schumer comically pokes fun at the celebrity-filled space journey
Schumer took a playful jab at the launch by posting a video on her Instagram, where she joked about getting a last-minute invitation to join the celebrity crew. “Guys, they just added me to the space mission at the last minute, and now I'm going to space,” the 43-year-old joked.
“I’m bringing this [a black panther toy] with me. It doesn’t mean anything to me, but it was in my bag when I was on the Subway. Then I got the text asking if I wanted to go to space, so here I am,” the comedian continued, adding, “Thanks to everyone who made this happen. I’ll catch you all in space!”
Olivia Wilde jokes about Katy Perry's dramatic reaction upon returning to Earth
Olivia Wilde took a jab at the space mission by posting a meme that poked fun at Perry's over-the-top reaction when she returned to Earth after only a few minutes in space. The meme features the Roar singer kissing the ground after exiting the space capsule, with the caption, “Getting off a commercial flight in 2025 #BlueOrigin.”
The 41-year-old shared the funny meme on her Instagram Story, adding, “Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess.” Alongside Perry and Sanchez, the six-woman crew for the flight also included Gayle King, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn.
Olivia Munn describes the Blue Origin flight as 'excessive'
Olivia Munn was one of the first stars to speak out against the commercial space mission. On the April 3 episode of Today With Jenna & Friends, she questioned, “What are they doing?” She acknowledged that her opinion might not be popular, but emphasized, “There are so many other pressing issues in the world right now.”
The Predator actress continued, “What’s the point? Is it really historic to just go for a ride? It feels a bit excessive to me,” and added, “Space exploration should be about expanding our knowledge and benefiting humanity. What are they actually going to accomplish up there that will improve things for us down here?”
