Tamil cinema experienced a satisfactory year, although it appeared somewhat lacklustre in comparison to its achievements in 2023. Nevertheless, the industry demonstrated that quality content reigns supreme, as even high-budget films starring prominent actors such as Rajinikanth and Vijay were eclipsed by productions that conveyed genuine narratives and resonated with viewers.

An improved year in 2023.

Tamil cinema experienced remarkable success in 2023, highlighted by its top-grossing films, including the Vijay-led Leo and the Rajinikanth-led Jailer, each generating over ₹600 crore in revenue. The ensemble film Ponniyin Selvan 2 also performed admirably, earning more than ₹340 crore. Additionally, titles such as Vaathi, Maaveeran, and Por Thozhil secured their places among the highest-grossing films of the year, captivating audiences with their compelling narratives. Notably, Jailer and Leo ranked among the highest earners in Indian cinema for that year. Other films, including Viduthalai Part 1, Jigarthanda Double X, Chithha, and Maamannan, also achieved significant milestones.

Superstar films receive a variety of reviews in 2024.

Jailer and Leo were not regarded as exemplary films, and the 2024 releases from Rajinikanth and Vijay, Vettaiyan and The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT), regrettably followed suit, prompting fans to question whether the actors' films from the previous year were superior. These films grossed ₹253 crore and ₹457 crore, respectively. Anticipation was high for Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam, Kamal Haasan's Indian 2, and Suriya's Kanguva; however, none of these films met the expectations set for them. In contrast, Vikram's Thangalaan received praise for its boldness, while Dhanush's films Captain Miller and Raayan were deemed acceptable.

The true victors.

In contrast, Vijay Sethupathi commenced the year with Sriram Raghavan’s Tamil-Hindi bilingual Merry Christmas, showcasing his diverse acting abilities in Nithilan Saminathan’s Maharaja and Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai Part 2. Additionally, the biopic Amaran, featuring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi as Major Mukund Varadarajan, achieved remarkable success, grossing over ₹300 crore and earning critical praise. The film Meiyazhagan, starring Karthi and Arvind Swami, resonated with audiences through its exceptional portrayal of friendship. Other films, such as Aranmanai 4 and Lubber Pandhu, also enjoyed favourable outcomes.

While The GOAT and Amaran rank among the highest-grossing Indian films of the year, it is noteworthy that, despite the film industry releasing several major star-studded projects throughout the year, it was the films that prioritized compelling storytelling that garnered the most recognition.
