Casting Bias & Social Media Influence: Nikita Dutta Shares Her Perspective – Exclusive

The discourse surrounding cinema and its various implications is currently at a high point. As the cultural landscape experiences periodic transformations, there remains an opportunity for improvement and innovation. However, this does not imply that challenges have been eradicated. A significant concern, widely acknowledged, is the practice of casting based on social media popularity. Recently, Hollywood actor Ethan Hawke addressed this issue, and now Nikita Dutta, who is set to appear in The Waking of a Nation, produced by Ram Madhvani, has expressed her perspective on the matter. The actress articulated why her experience on Ram Madhvani’s set was particularly invigorating in contrast to others, emphasizing that meritocracy was the sole criterion for securing a role.

Nikita Dutta Talks About Casting Based on Followers & Surnames

Nikita Dutta, recognized for her role in Kabir Singh, engaged in an exclusive discussion with her co-stars Bhawsheel Singh and Sahil Mehta at OTTplay. The trio delved into topics surrounding The Waking of a Nation, their collaboration with Ram Madhvani, the significance of merit in casting decisions, and their perspectives on social media as a tool for validation. Nikita highlighted the prevalent practice of casting based on follower counts and family names, expressing her appreciation for Ram Madhvani's departure from this norm.

"It is indeed a reality that casting often hinges on the number of followers one possesses, their surname, or existing industry connections. However, I find it quite refreshing. As actors and artists, we possess a genuine and sincere nature. For us, it is gratifying to know that if you deliver a commendable performance, opportunities will follow. If your work resonates with the audience, they will recognize and appreciate you," Nikita Dutta remarked.

Commending Ram Madhvani for his deviation from prevailing trends, she remarked, "When you approach the industry with such a perspective and encounter someone who makes casting decisions purely on merit, it rejuvenates my belief in the cinematic process and the passion we share for it. This has been my experience, at least. Collaborating with an individual like Ram Madhvani, who chooses talent solely based on their qualifications for the role, is truly rewarding. Ultimately, you find individuals who resonate with your own energy."

It is truly a hidden blessing to encounter individuals who possess genuine intentions and approach their craft with sincerity. I believe that all four of us participated in auditions for this show. Ram sir did not review our auditions and subsequently assess our social media presence; that is not his character. Therefore, I find it incredibly refreshing that, in this day and age, there are filmmakers of his caliber," Nikita Dutta remarked.

The Waking of a Nation is set to premiere on SonyLIV on March 7, 2025.
