Emilia Pérez has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the highest number of nominations ever for a film in the musical/comedy categories, totaling ten. This reflects the significant acclaim for the drug cartel musical drama that captivated audiences at Cannes earlier this year. Audiard, who has also received nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Original Score, is undoubtedly a formidable contender. With previous nominations for his films The Prophet and Rust and Bone in the non-English film category, he is well-acquainted with the HFPA. Should he triumph, he would emerge as a strong candidate in the Oscar race.

A notable competitor in the Best Director category is Brady Corbet, recognized for his three-hour epic drama, The Brutalist, which tells the story of a Holocaust survivor. With seven nominations, The Brutalist has gained significant traction since its victory for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. Both Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce are also strong contenders for acting awards; however, if there is a credible frontrunner for The Brutalist to secure a Golden Globe, it is undoubtedly in the Best Director category.

Edward Berger's Conclave has received six nominations, while Coraline Fargeat's body-horror film The Substance and Sean Baker's Anora each garnered five nominations.

Kapadia's potential win in the Best Director category may be perceived as an unexpected outcome, although the Golden Globes have generally favored more conventional choices in this category. Over the past five years, all winning films have been American productions, with three of those winners also achieving the Oscar for Best Director.

All We Imagine As Light appears to have a stronger chance in the Non-English feature film category. It has gained considerable momentum, having recently won several critics' circle awards. The film has been recognized as the Best Foreign Language Film of the year by various organizations, including the Gotham Awards, New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, San Diego Film Critics Society, Chicago Film Critics Association, and Toronto Film Critics Association. Additionally, Sight and Sound has named it the best film of the year, a significant accomplishment that places it ahead of competitors such as The Seed of the Sacred Fig, I'm Still Here, and Anora.

Richard Attenborough's biopic Gandhi remains the only Indian co-production to have won in the Non-English feature film category, achieving this honor in 1982. Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! was another notable nomination in 1988, directed by a female filmmaker. In 2022, SS Rajamouli's RRR also received a nomination in the same category.

The Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live and exclusively in India on Lionsgate Play on January 6th, commencing at 6:30 AM IST.
