The Sunset Fire has tragically claimed five lives and wiped out whole neighborhoods since it started on Tuesday morning. In addition, the Eaton Fire in the San Gabriel Valley and the Palisades Fire in the Pacific Palisades have destroyed over 1,000 buildings.
A BBC report reveals that a fast-moving wildfire is getting dangerously close to the famous Hollywood sign, putting the 50-foot-tall landmark, which has been around since the 1970s, at serious risk.
Videos have surfaced of a helicopter flying low over the Hollywood Hills, where the sign is located. Another clip captures a massive fireball consuming the hilly area near the sign.
California's wildfire situation
The news just dropped that Hollywood Boulevard had to be evacuated because officials warned that another 100,000 residents might need to leave their homes. A massive fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills and quickly spread to about a mile away from the Hollywood Bowl and the Walk of Fame.
A-list celebs like Paris Hilton and Heidi Montag have been hit hard, losing their homes in the chaos. Paris shared that she lost her Malibu place, where they made so many amazing memories, and expressed her heartfelt support for all the families affected by the fires.
AccuWeather is predicting around $57 billion in initial damages and economic losses due to the fires. Firefighters from various states are either already on the scene or heading there to assist with the situation.
In the Hollywood Hills, over 1,000 buildings, mainly homes, have been wiped out, and more than 130,000 folks are currently under evacuation orders.
Due to the ongoing crisis, several events in the awards season have been pushed back. The Academy has extended the Oscars nominations voting period by two days to allow members more time to submit their votes, as many are being evacuated because of the fires. The Critics Choice Awards, originally set for January 12, has been rescheduled to January 26 because of the devastating fires affecting Southern California. Additionally, the production of various TV shows and films has been paused due to the fires.
