The moment K-drama fans have been desperately waiting for is finally here! Byeon Woo Seok is set to lead the acting charge in a new romance drama series. The South Korean star's big break comes months after his last series, Lovely Runner, soared to shocking breakout success. Despite gaining an upward graph on his professional trajectory, the 20th Century Girl heartthrob has appeared to patiently weigh out his options while finally greenlighting this next career move.

Byeon Woo Seok and IU's new romance K-drama announced

According to Kakao Entertainment's December 2 announcement, Byeon Woo Seok will be romancing beloved K-pop idol IU in the upcoming MBC drama, “Wife of a 21st Century Prince” (working title). The former will step in as Lee Ahn, a prince singularly credited with his inherited identity as a royal family member. On the other hand, IU will play Sung Hee Joo, the beauty and brains of the family that spearheads Korea's biggest conglomerate.

The forthcoming drama's alternate re-imagination of Korea as a constitutional monarchy is set to place IU and Woo Seok's characters in starkly opposing situations. While Sung Hee Joo is a chaebol heiress with immense power in the palm of her hand, she is still deemed a commoner. On the contrary, Lee Ahn bears no pride related to his identity other than upholding his status as the king's son. Ultimately, it's these star-crossed revelations that tie both characters' red strings of fate together.

What have Byeon Woo Seok and IU been up to this year?

The Lovely Runner actor recently made headlines for his unforgettable cameo in tvN series No Gain No Love, starring Shin Min A and Kim Young Dae. He also stole the spotlight at the 2024 MAMA Awards last weekend when he reprised his role as the lead singer of Lovely Runner's fictional band ECLIPSE. Not only was the audience floored to see him take the stage for an enchanting live performance of the K-drama's OST “Sudden Shower,” he also took home the Favourite Global Trending Music Award on the second day of MAMA's Japan chapter.

As for IU, formally known as Lee Ji Eun, the South Korean diva charmed the global audience with her first world tour – the HEREH World Tour – this year. Her spellbinding live performances during the course of her worldwide concert gigs even earned her multiple awards, including the Stage of the Year and Best Solo Female honours at the Melon Music Awards 2024 this weekend.

In addition to releasing her mini-album “The Winning” and expanding her mesmerising discography this year, the multi-hyphenate artist booked a Netflix K-drama outing in When Life Gives You Tangerines alongside Park Bo Gum. Its release date has yet to be announced.

"Wife of a 21st Century Prince" is slated to air on MBC sometime in the latter half of 2025.
