Tom Cruise privately expressed his apologies to Brooke Shields regarding his well-known "ridiculous rant" concerning her use of antidepressants, as disclosed by the actress in her recent memoir. In "Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman," published on Tuesday, she reveals that the actor ultimately conveyed his regret for his public remarks, which had generated significant controversy at the time.

Regarding the apology from the Mission Impossible actor, Shields stated, “It may not have been the most exemplary apology, but it was within his capacity, and I accepted it.”

She reflected on her experience of “defending herself” after Cruise made his well-known disparaging remarks towards her. In 2005, the actor labelled Shields as “irresponsible” for taking antidepressants while coping with postpartum depression. He further asserted that the medication “didn’t cure anything,” as reported by Page Six. In response to this incident, she authored an op-ed in the New York Times as a rebuttal to the actor.

Shields firmly believed that her actions were not solely about “standing up” against “irrational and dangerous comments from an uneducated actor who was far beyond his expertise.” It was also aimed at “encouraging discussions on the reality and prevalence of postpartum depression.”

In her book, she reflects on the incident, stating, “If Tom had publicly confronted me prior to my becoming a mother, I likely would have remained silent. I would have dismissed his absurd tirade.” She acknowledges that she might have been willing to allow this prominent individual to exploit her experience for his own misguided purposes, believing that his actions would ultimately reveal his true character.

Nevertheless, she chose not to “remain…silent” and endure the “attacks,” as she felt “empowered by self-assurance” at that time. She noted, “Ten years ago, I might have regretted disclosing my story or felt uncertain, worrying that my career was stagnating while a dominant male actor targeted me, convinced that I stood no chance in that confrontation.”
