The Hollywood Hills mansion that was once home to Britney Spears and Brittany Murphy is back on the market for a staggering price, despite its troubled past.
Brittany Murphy, who starred in Clueless, tragically passed away at her Los Angeles residence (1895 Rising Glen Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90069) on December 20, 2009. Just five months later, her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, was also found dead in the same house. Murphy's death was attributed to untreated pneumonia, low blood count, and multiple drug intoxication, while Monjack's cause of death was eerily similar, involving severe anemia and acute pneumonia. Murphy had moved into the Hollywood home six years prior to her untimely death, purchasing it for $3.85 million from Britney Spears, according to property records.
Britney Spears and Brittany Murphy's old Hollywood house, known for its spooky reputation, is up for sale again.
A Zillow listing has popped up, revealing that the “reborn” house is on the market for a cool $17,995,000, as reported by RadarOnline.com. The place is getting a total makeover and is now searching for a new owner. The current owners snagged it for $11.59 million back in 2020, and now David Parnes and James Harris from Carolwood Estates are handling the sale.
The eerie history of the property is hard to ignore, especially since both Murphy and her husband passed away there in 2009. Over the years, rumors surfaced suggesting that mold in the house might have played a role in their deaths, but the medical examiner's office dismissed those theories back in 2010.
To make things even creepier, Monjack’s mom shared with the Daily Mail in 2013 that before he died, he was experiencing hallucinations where he felt like things were crawling under his skin.
Britney Spears moved out of her Hollywood Hills house due to unsettling experiences with "bad spirits."
Before the late couple moved into the LA mansion, pop star Britney Spears had her own issues with the place. Both she and Murphy sensed something was off about the house on Rising Glen Road, right above the Sunset Strip.
At the time, Spears was dating Justin Timberlake. Her former makeup artist, Julianne Kaye, claimed that the reason Spears left the house was due to a supposed paranormal experience. On a 2021 episode of the “We Need to Talk About Britney” podcast, Kaye shared, “Spears had that place up on Sunset Plaza — and I have to say, it was really strange … She called me … I had my friend do reiki healing on her," Kaye explained. "He came over after she had a wild weekend and needed to chill. After he left, she was convinced he opened some spirit portal or something, and these bad spirits came in … and they were trying to push her down the stairs or something wild.”
Kaye continued, “It freaked her out so much that she left. She went to stay at the Casa Del Mar hotel and never returned to the house. She said, 'I know you’re gonna think I’m nuts. I’m not nuts. I know what I saw. I know what I felt.’”
Brittany Murphy didn't really like the house, either.
Right after Murphy passed away, Simon shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2011 that she really couldn’t stand the Rising Glen house. He remembered a chat they had where she would always ask, “Can we just stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel?” whenever they drove up Sunset. He’d respond, “Babe, you’ve got to be practical. We’ve got our own place, a huge 10,000-square-foot home. We’re sticking with it.”
The notorious LA house has changed hands many times since the couple's puzzling deaths.
The couple never had kids while they were together, but they were looking forward to starting a family when they planned to move to New York in 2010. Brittany’s mom, Sharon Murphy, lived with them too. After Brittany and her husband passed away, Sharon had a tough time selling the house and ended up taking a big loss. Eventually, it sold for $2.7 million in 2011.
Since then, the house has changed hands several times and is said to have lost its original charm, as it was “completely renovated and refurbished in 2024,” according to Zillow. Now, it boasts 9,400 square feet with five bedrooms and eight and a half bathrooms.
