Filmmaker and writer Abbas Tyrewala has expressed his concerns regarding the rising prevalence of Muslim villains in Hindi cinema, stating that he has started to feel discomfort with the political narratives presented in contemporary films. Abbas, known for directing "Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na," has also contributed dialogue to notable films such as "War," "2.0," and "Pathaan."

Abbas Tyrewala on Muslim villains in Bollywood

In a discussion with Lallantop, Abbas remarked, “In the past, films were crafted by uniquely individualistic filmmakers. I collaborated with like-minded individuals, and there were few occasions when the portrayal of villainy or the political message of a film caused me discomfort. However, the situation has changed. My perspective is not influenced by my identity as an Indian Muslim; rather, from a writing standpoint, it has become predictable to encounter yet another Muslim villain.”

Currently, the writer is engaged in crafting the Hindi dialogue for Pawan Kalyan's Telugu historical drama "Hari Hara Veera Mallu," which features Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb as the antagonist. This character also served as the villain in the recent Hindi film "Chhaava." Abbas commented, “The portrayal of Aurangzeb as a villain carries a significant weight in terms of representation. While there is an undeniable historical truth, there is also a tendency to exaggerate for cinematic effect. Nevertheless, the events of history cannot be overlooked.”
