Director Bong Joon Ho's highly anticipated film Mickey 17, marking his first endeavour since the Academy Award-winning Parasite, is poised for its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. The film's leading actor, Robert Pattinson, along with director Bong Joon Ho, attended a press conference in Seoul, where they engaged in discussions about the filmmaking process and posed for photographs. During the event, the director not only discussed the challenges and delays the film has encountered regarding its release but also shared his insights on the concept of 'outsmarting' artificial intelligence.

What Bong said

According to a recent report by Screen Daily, Bong discussed the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) over the past few years, stating, "Every night, I ponder how I can craft a screenplay that AI cannot replicate. I aspire to include a ‘move 78’ on every other page of my scripts. How can we surpass AI? My goal is to be a writer who produces one screenplay annually that AI would be unable to imitate." He also mentioned that the release of the film was postponed as a result of the strikes that occurred last year.

On casting Robert Pattinson

The director commented on the choice to cast Robert in the leading role, stating: "Robert is well-known for his portrayals of superheroes such as Batman, but I had also observed his performances in the Safdie brothers' Good Time and Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse. He has showcased exceptional talent in these outstanding independent American films, which has always piqued my interest. The character of Mickey required a range of emotions, transitioning from the pitiable and somewhat foolish Mickey 17 to the frenetic yet charming Mickey 18, so I envisioned Pattinson for this role from the outset. The casting process was quite straightforward as well, as it appeared he was eager to take on such an unconventional character."

The film draws inspiration from Edward Ashton's novel of the same name and boasts a diverse ensemble cast, including Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Ashton’s novel, released earlier this year, focuses on Mickey7, an individual on a mission to colonize the icy planet Niflheim.
