Filmmaker Boney Kapoor expressed his support for Telugu actor Allu Arjun regarding the recent legal issues surrounding the death of a fan at the premiere of his film, Pushpa 2: The Rule. Kapoor stated that Arjun has been 'unjustly implicated' in the matter, emphasizing that the incident was solely a result of the overwhelming crowd present at the event.
Boney Kapoor defends Allu Arjun
During a roundtable discussion for filmmakers hosted by Galatta Plus, Boney shared his experiences regarding the fervent enthusiasm of South Indian fans for prominent film stars. He recounted his astonishment upon witnessing the release of an Ajith film at 1 a.m., where he observed a crowd of approximately 20,000 to 25,000 individuals outside the theatre. Even after exiting the screening around 3:30 to 4 a.m., he noted that the crowd remained unchanged. He mentioned that similar scenes occur with films featuring icons such as Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, and contemporary stars like Jr NTR, Ram Charan, and Mahesh Babu.
Boney then connected this phenomenon to the recent incident involving Allu Arjun's arrest, stating, "The ticket prices tend to be significantly increased during the first two days, particularly on the opening day for additional screenings. This pricing strategy has contributed to the unfortunate situation where Allu Arjun was unjustly implicated in the death of a fan, which was solely a result of the overwhelming crowd gathered to watch the film."
What is the Pushpa 2 stampede case?
On December 4, the day before the release of Pushpa 2, a special screening of the film was organized for fans at the Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad. Arjun attended the event alongside his co-star Rashmika Mandanna and his wife, Sneha Reddy. According to police reports, the presence of the star attracted a large crowd, resulting in a stampede-like incident that led to the tragic death of a 35-year-old woman. The state government has asserted that Arjun attended the theatre without proper authorization and did not vacate the premises when informed of the escalating situation. Arjun has refuted these claims.
Last month, the actor was taken into custody on charges of culpable homicide, among other offences. However, he was released the following day after the Telangana High Court granted him interim bail. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
