Boman Irani embarked on his journey as a photographer in his 30s, transitioned to film acting at the age of 43, and is now poised to make his directorial debut at 65. He does not conform to traditional timelines in his career. His inaugural directorial project, The Mehta Boys, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video this week. Prior to the release, the actor-director engaged in a conversation with HT to discuss the film and other topics.

Boman Irani on The Mehta Boys

Regarding The Mehta Boys, Boman describes it as a narrative centered on a father and son who struggle to connect but are compelled to spend time together under unexpected circumstances. He explains that the film's premise is designed to resonate with audiences, stating, "It is a more accessible film for viewers because it is highly relatable." He believes that audiences will easily identify with the characters, remarking, "They will think, 'that's my dad, that's my uncle. This is how my brother and father interact.'"

Boman experienced the loss of his father when he was merely six months old and never had the opportunity to meet him. Ironically, his first film explores the dynamics of a father-son relationship. He reflects on this connection with humor, saying, “I never met my father. Perhaps I am sensing a void somewhere. I cannot say for certain. I am not attempting to frame it in a psychological context. I was simply drawn to the story, and if you feel that connection, the reasons are likely similar.”

‘A film has to be personal’

When asked what renders the film personal, Boman responds, "Even if David Fincher is directing a film like Seven without having lived the life of a serial killer, it must still hold personal significance."

He emphasizes the importance of relatability, noting, "The connection is so apparent; it truly facilitates the film's accessibility for audiences with emotional depth."

Boman reveals that he based the father-son relationship depicted in the film on real-life experiences, albeit not his own. He shares, "I conducted numerous interviews. While I cannot disclose names, we all have our moments of backseat driving, and I have drawn from a wealth of personal insights."

The Mehta Boys features Boman Irani and Avinash Tiwary, along with Shreya Chaudhry and Puja Sarup. The film is scheduled for release on Amazon Prime Video on February 7.
