Bollywood Needs a Makeover, Says Emraan Hashmi
23 days ago | 5 Views
Emraan Hashmi, recognized as one of Bollywood's most versatile actors, believes that remaining open to innovative concepts and methods from younger talents is essential for navigating the evolving film industry. Throughout his career spanning more than two decades, he has appeared in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films and television series, such as Gangster, The Dirty Picture, Shanghai, Raaz, Murder, and Jannat.
Emraan Hashmi on relevance
Hashmi recently engaged in a conversation with PTI, emphasizing the importance of innovation. As a new generation of actors and filmmakers emerges, he believes it is essential to stay relevant. In his view, relevance hinges on the ability to learn from past mistakes, making it imperative to embrace this process.
For him, maintaining relevance involves releasing the past and embracing fresh ideas. By adopting a new viewpoint, one can investigate innovative methods, such as reinterpreting classic characters, genres, and films through a modern lens, rather than depending on outdated practices. He believes that this is when the notion of relevance becomes essential.
The actor, who made his debut in the web series Bard of Blood, views such choices as an integral part of his development as an artist. The transition he experienced while working on the Netflix series in 2017 and 2018 was significant. Clinging to the mindset of "I will continue doing what I have always done" would hinder his ability to remain relevant.
Call for industry-wide recalibration
Hashmi underscored the urgent need for recalibration, expressing his concerns regarding the film industry's growing complacency. The industry is evidently entering a transformative phase that necessitates a thorough reevaluation of the films being created. It is essential to produce works that convey a stronger sense of place and resonate with the pan-Indian ethos.
The prevalence of conceptual films and Western influences on OTT platforms has diminished the potential for an elite quality in cinema. To achieve the desired outcomes, a significant shift in the types of films being produced is crucial. However, this situation is troubling, and the actor remains optimistic that a balance will eventually be achieved, as the journey is not yet complete.
He further expressed that, in his view, the industry is "still far from" meeting audience expectations, with denial playing a significant role in this shortfall. To this day, Hashmi often receives inquiries from fans and fellow actors regarding his reduced involvement in films since 2019. He emphasized that to understand the current landscape, one must pay attention to narrative storytelling.
He stated, "People have yet to adjust from what can be described as the single-screen era; when multiplexes emerged, audiences began to embrace a particular Western sensibility."
Hindering progress in Bollywood
In light of the current landscape of Hindi cinema, Hashmi openly admitted that he has become more selective in his choices. He expressed that it is disheartening when a film fails to connect with its audience in any meaningful way. While some movies may receive critical acclaim, they often struggle at the box office. The primary objective should be to create a film that appeals to a wide audience, making it essential to achieve a favorable outcome. This perspective shapes his approach whenever he reviews a screenplay or decides on a project.
In "Tiger 3," Emraan portrayed a formidable antagonist; however, he has since indicated that he intends to move away from such roles. His attachment to the character motivated him to participate in the film, as the villain had a unique backstory that set it apart from typical portrayals. Moving forward, he plans to be more discerning in accepting similar roles.
Upcoming release: Ground Zero
Ground Zero, an action-thriller directed by Tejas Deoskar, known for his work on Chhatriwali and Bucket List, is the upcoming project of the actor. Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment, the film is currently in preparation for its release. It is scheduled to debut in theaters on April 25 and includes performances by Sai Tamhankar and Zoya Hussain, among others.
