“Bollywood Isn’t Lagging Behind”: Aamir Khan on Comparisons with Regional Film Industries

Aamir Khan, the actor and producer, thinks Bollywood is doing just fine compared to regional films. In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India, he mentioned that the quality of Hindi films has actually gotten better since the 70s and 80s, and he believes the industry is just going through a rough patch right now.

Aamir Khan discussing the state of Bollywood

Aamir acknowledged that there's always room for growth in filmmaking, but he doesn't believe the Hindi film industry makes lower quality films. He mentioned, 'I'm not saying we can't improve as filmmakers; I definitely think we can learn from other industries. But is the quality of filmmaking really that different across the country? Do you think Hindi films are significantly worse than Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, or Marathi films?' He reflected on how the concept of mainstream has changed since he started in 1988, stating, 'I'm not convinced that other film industries are producing more quality films than Hindi.

If you look back at the films we were making... I mean, in the 70s and 80s when I entered in '88, most of those films were at the bottom of Indian cinema. We've come a long way since then. Back then, mainstream was a very limited path. Now, various types of films are succeeding, which is a positive change. Every industry has its ups and downs; we're just experiencing a low point right now, but that's nothing new. These things go in cycles.'

The internet responds

When a clip of the conversation started circulating on X (formerly Twitter), opinions were split. Some users sided with Aamir, while others thought he was off base. One user remarked, 'Cleverly using the 80s as a way to feel better,' while another said, 'Bollywood should focus on original stories instead of remakes; they have the talent to create masterpieces like they used to.' Someone even mentioned, 'Aamir loves to stay in his delulu...'

On the flip side, some users supported Aamir, with one stating, 'Bollywood does have great content, but 95% of it doesn't get mainstream support. Hindi web series like Panchayat, Gulak, and early Mirzapur are fantastic.'

Another user noted, 'There’s some truth to that. Quality films are struggling to find an audience after the rise of OTT platforms. Previously, Hindi trackers focused on multiplex audiences, which helped quality films. Now, they’ve moved to OTT, and that’s a big challenge.'

Aamir's latest projects include starring in and producing the 2022 film Laal Singh Chaddha, as well as his upcoming roles in Sitaare Zameen Par and Lahore 1947. He’s also set to make a cameo in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie.
