Previously, writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar stated that Dharmendra had declined the role in the 1973 film Zanjeer, leading to Amitabh Bachchan being considered as the final choice for the lead role. Recently, in an interview with Instant Bollywood, Bobby Deol disclosed the heartfelt reason that influenced his father's decision to pass on the iconic film.

Bobby Deol recalls dad, Dharmendra, doing a film to help a relative

When inquired about whether he or his family had ever participated in films as a means of reciprocation, Bobby reminisced about an instance involving his father. He shared that his father once acted in a film to assist a relative who was experiencing financial difficulties. Bobby stated, “There was a film called Satyakam. My father took part in it for my aunt’s husband, who was going through some financial hardships. He provided them with ₹25 lakhs. While I can't recall the exact figure, just consider the significance of giving ₹25 lakhs in the 1960s. My father has always been someone who looks after others.”

Why Dharmendra rejected Zanjeer

Bobby Deol further recounted the emotional circumstances that led Dharmendra to turn down the role in Zanjeer, stating, “When the opportunity for Zanjeer arose, my father was eager to take it. However, we had a cousin sister who seemed to have some issues with Prakash Mehra Ji. One day, she visited our home and declared, ‘I swear, if you take this film, you will only see my dead body.’ As a result, my father felt compelled to forgo Zanjeer.”

In 2022, Dharmendra also addressed Javed Akhtar’s remarks. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to express, “Javed, how are you… In this world of appearances, the truth often remains hidden. Wishing you well… I know how to bring joy to hearts… I only wish I had learned the art of speaking boldly.”

Bobby Deol is set to appear next in "Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 – Sword vs Spirit," featuring Pawan Kalyan in the lead role, alongside co-stars Nidhhi Agerwal, Nargis Fakhri, and Nora Fatehi. The film is slated for a theatrical release on May 9. Additionally, he is involved in the upcoming project "Alpha," which stars Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, and is expected to premiere in December.
