The National Commission for Women (NCW) has summoned YouTuber Elvish Yadav regarding his racist remarks directed at actor and Bigg Boss 18 contestant Chum Darang. According to a report by News18, he is required to appear on February 17.
NCW Addresses Elvish Yadav's Comments
The NCW took notice of Elvish's derogatory statements made about Chum during his podcast, where he ridiculed her name and ethnicity, leading to significant backlash. He also made light of her casting in Gangubai Kathiawadi while joking about her.
He remarked, “Karanveer must have definitely had COVID because who would like Chum, bro? Who has such bad taste! And even Chum's name itself is vulgar… Her name is Chum, and she worked in Gangubai Kathiawadi.”
His comments sparked outrage on social media. PTI reports that the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has vehemently condemned these "derogatory and racist" remarks. In a letter to the chairperson of the National Commission for Women, APSCW chairperson Kenjum Pakam stated that the remarks not only insulted Chum but also disrespected women from Northeast India. The commission has called for stringent action against Elvish, urging authorities to address the matter in accordance with legal provisions.
How Chum Darang reacted
Chum expressed her strong disapproval of the situation by posting a statement that condemned Elvish’s remarks. Although she did not mention him by name, she emphasized that he had blurred the line between humour and hate. She stated, “Disrespecting an individual’s identity and name is not ‘fun.’ Ridiculing someone’s accomplishments is not ‘banter.’ It is essential to establish a clear distinction between humour and hate. What is particularly disheartening is that this issue extends beyond my ethnicity; my dedication and a film supported by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali was also belittled.”
In response to the backlash, Elvish defended himself in a vlog, asserting, “So, I checked to see if I had made any racist comments. I had made a remark about Chum. Regardless of whether I said it or not, I have removed it. I do not wish to invite any negativity. If anyone was offended by my words, then brother, I have taken that part out.”
