The trailer for the anticipated Netflix series The Royals was released on Tuesday during an extravagant, royal launch event. The series is expected to offer a new, emotionally profound angle to the rom-com genre, and leading actress Bhumi Pednekar was the focal point of the event, openly discussing her journey, connection to the narrative, and the significant effect portraying Sophia had on her.

Bhumi disclosed that it was the strength of the screenplay that attracted her to the project. “It was the script that motivated me, that encouraged me to take on this concept. Everyone at this table—I adore, adore. This rom-com genre is undeniably my top favorite. Each time I log onto Netflix, I think, ‘What new rom-com has been released? What can we discover? ’” The actress recounted a fascinating story about her first meeting with The Royals. “I recall it was November 2023, when Rangita and I first connected. I was suffering from dengue, so I was hospitalized. I began reading The Royals in the midst of a fever. . . and I just couldn’t put it down. I remember asking my team, ‘Can I receive another episode? ’ And that’s how I ended up reading the full series. ”

Looking back on her experience with the cast and crew, Bhumi described it as one of her most valued professional moments. “It’s by far one of the most fulfilling experiences. The time we all spent together is something we hold dear to this day. I’ve formed some really close friendships on this set—it’s a support system you rely on. ” Discussing her character Sophia, Bhumi conveyed how strongly she connected with her. “I’m fortunate I got to portray Sofia because she has so many dimensions. She’s assertive and headstrong, but that’s what makes her lovely. She’s resilient, caring, and affectionate. I picked up many subtle traits from the outstanding women I collaborated with on set. ” She added, “While bringing Sofia to life, I realized how similar we are—her beliefs, her passion, her drive, her intensity. I carry a lot of that intensity within me as well. I had to feel comfortable with my identity. It was healing. I had to acknowledge that the audience might see a very authentic part of me, and that’s perfectly fine. ”

Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, The Royals is written by Neha Veena Sharma and produced by Pritish Nandy Communications. The Netflix series is brought to life by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy. Featuring an impressive cast—including Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Sumukhi Suresh, Udit Arora, Lisa Mishra, and Luke Kenny—The Royals is scheduled to debut on Netflix on May 9.
