Actor Ben Stiller is serious about the success of Ryan Coogler's critically acclaimed film Sinners, which hit theaters on April 18. In a now-celebrated post on X (formerly Twitter), he passionately stood up for the film's impressive $60 million opening. Here’s what he had to say.

Ben Stiller defends Sinners' box office performance during its opening weekend

Sinners is a unique thriller that blends genres, featuring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld. Produced by Warner Bros., the film had a strong global opening, raking in $61 million. Variety shared an article on X about the film's box office performance, stating, “Sinners” has earned $61 million in its worldwide debut. This is a solid outcome for an original, R-rated horror flick, but with a production cost of $90 million before global marketing, it still has a long way to go before turning a profit.”

In response, Ben fired back, saying, “In what world does a $60 million opening for an original studio film deserve this kind of headline?” He also replied to a comment that noted, “$60 million seems like an awesome opening weekend,” with “It is.” One fan humorously remarked, “They’re just trying to steer people away from the huge mistake of creating something original.” Another puzzled fan chimed in, asking, “I don’t get it. Who in their right mind thinks they’ll make a profit right after launching a product?”

Sinners Overview

Sinners features Michael as identical twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, who come back to their Mississippi hometown hoping to escape their troubled history. However, they soon encounter an even darker force upon their return. The story takes place in the 1932 American South, during the Jim Crow era, a time when laws enforced racial discrimination. The film has been highly praised by critics, boasting a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and a 97% audience rating on the Popcornmeter.
