Actor and director Ben Affleck collaborated with his friend Matt Damon to create the screenplay for Good Will Hunting, a film that achieved classic status and earned him an Academy Award. Interestingly, his father's position at Harvard significantly influenced his work.

Ben looks back

In an interview with GQ magazine, Ben reflected on the process of co-writing the film with his close friend Matt Damon. After facing rejection for significant roles, Ben and Matt were motivated to create the script for Good Will Hunting. He also mentioned the considerable influence his father had on him.

Ben remarked, “My father worked as a janitor at Harvard... At that time, like many young people and perhaps even some older individuals, I wished for my dad to be seen as a hero. I think I incorporated some of that sentiment into the concept, but we really... had to improvise. When it came to developing complex mathematical solutions, we had to reach out to experts who could assist us.”

He remarked, "We learned that during the creation of Star Trek, the writers would often simply say 'tech, tech, tech' when developing their science fiction elements. So, we adopted that approach. Subsequently, audiences responded with confusion, asking, 'What exactly is the technology?' To which we replied, 'Oh, we assumed that was understood.' This is how things operate in the entertainment industry. Their response was, 'No one does that.' We even had mathematicians from MIT who, by the way, could have been entirely fabricating their contributions."

About the film

The 1997 film Good Will Hunting, featuring Robin Williams, showcases a young Matt Damon in the lead role of Will, who embarks on a journey toward greatness under the guidance of his mentor, Sean Maguire, portrayed by Williams. A key lesson conveyed through Will's experiences is that true happiness and success do not necessarily stem from fulfilling obligations. Directed by Gus Van Sant, the screenplay was crafted by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who were awarded an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
