Ben Affleck Opens Up About Batman Role: ‘Tough Experience,’ Says Son Was Even Scared
3 days ago | 5 Views
When Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in the DC Extended Universe, he was the most prominent actor to assume the role. Despite his appearances in several DCEU films as the Dark Knight, his tenure concluded before he could star in a standalone film within the franchise. This experience, coupled with the trajectory of DC films, appears to have dissuaded Affleck from pursuing further involvement in superhero movies.
Ben Affleck says being Batman was excruciating
In a recent interview with GQ, the actor discussed the challenges he faced while portraying Batman in films such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, describing the experience as 'excruciating.' He explained, "There are several factors that contributed to this difficult experience, and they extend beyond the typical dynamics of being in a superhero film. My disinterest in revisiting that genre is not solely due to that negative experience; rather, I have simply lost the enthusiasm that once drew me to it. I certainly would not want to go through a similar experience again. Much of the difficulty stemmed from a misalignment of goals, understandings, and expectations. Additionally, I must acknowledge that I was not contributing anything particularly valuable to the situation at that time. I had my own significant shortcomings during that period."
Ben Affleck reveals his son was too scared to watch those films
In the course of the interview, the actor from Argo reflected on the increasing darkness of DC superhero films, which contributed to his disinterest in the genre. He remarked, "What occurred was that the content began to appeal to an older demographic, alienating a significant portion of the audience. Even my own son was too frightened to watch the film at that time. Upon realizing this, I thought, 'Oh no, we have an issue.' It seemed that there was a filmmaker intent on pursuing this darker direction, while the studio aimed to reconnect with a younger audience, leading to conflicting objectives. This situation, with two parties striving for different outcomes, creates a problematic scenario."
Ben Affleck's Batman run
Ben Affleck made his debut as Batman in the 2016 movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, featuring Henry Cavill as Superman. He reprised his role in both Suicide Squad and Justice League. Affleck was originally slated to direct and star in his own standalone film, The Batman. However, the DCEU came to an end in 2023. He is set to appear next in The Accountant 2, scheduled for release next month.
