Actor Ben Affleck was recently at the premiere of The Accountant 2, held at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. While on the red carpet, he chatted with the Associated Press about California's production challenges and shared his thoughts on why a lot of high-budget films are shifting their production overseas.

Ben Affleck believes that California doesn't fully appreciate Hollywood

While chatting with AP on the red carpet, Ben shared, “Other locations offer better exchange rates or tax rebate incentives designed to attract this industry because they recognize how beneficial it is for their economies. I think California has somewhat taken this industry for granted.”

He noted that California Governor Gavin Newsom has suggested raising the state’s cap on tax incentives for the film and television sector. However, he believes this move won’t be enough to keep production companies from filming in other states. He explained, “The percentage of the budget you get back just doesn’t stack up against places like England, which is why many major films are shot there.”

Ben also highlighted that states like Georgia, New Mexico, Louisiana, Texas, Massachusetts, and New Jersey have been very appealing due to their incentives. He concluded by saying that when skilled technicians leave California, it ultimately ‘harms the industry’ in the long run.

Latest developments

The Hollywood Reporter notes that despite facing challenges, Ben has been focusing on local production for his recent projects. The Accountant 2 was filmed in part in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita. Additionally, he is currently working on a Netflix film titled Animals in California, where he also takes on a leading role.

Ben has produced a variety of projects lately, including Kiss the Future, The Instigators, Unstoppable, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Accountant 2, and RIP. In The Accountant 2, which is a sequel to the 2016 film, Ben stars alongside Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, JK Simmons, and Daniella Pineda.
