In 2024, Affleck and Lopez initiated divorce proceedings, citing "irreconcilable differences," which marked the conclusion of their two-year marriage. This decision followed shortly after online speculation regarding the deterioration of their relationship.
During an interview on Tuesday, the star of The Accountant revealed that he is inherently more "private" and "reserved" compared to Lopez. However, Affleck clarified that the 55-year-old's documentary, Greatest Love Story Never Told, which explores their relationship, was not the primary reason for their separation.
Affleck reflected, "If I’m going to be involved in this, I want to approach it honestly and in a way that captivates interest." He acknowledged that he found the project to be a compelling exploration at the time.
He further stated, "There are many individuals, including Jennifer, who have navigated celebrity life more skillfully than I have." He noted, "My nature leans towards being more reserved and private than hers. In relationships, differing perspectives on such matters are common," he added.
Affleck continued, "I found it intriguing to consider how one reconciles these differences. It’s true that I love and support this person. I believe in her and think she is remarkable. I want others to recognize that," he elaborated.
Reflecting on a statement he made in the documentary, he remarked, "You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, ‘I don’t enjoy being on the water.’ You must take responsibility for what you understood when entering any relationship." He also pointed out, "Watching that documentary won’t provide clarity on the issues that arose between us."
Despite their differences, Affleck expressed "nothing but respect" for his former spouse. The star of Deep Water emphasized that Lopez is "someone I hold in high regard," and he stressed that he does not wish to imply that "the boundary between public and private life" resulted in "negativity or judgment."
