Bazooka’s Gautham Vasudev Menon: I like police procedurals, but I am not writing in that genre now

In the directorial career of filmmaker and actor Gautham Vasudev Menon, several notable works include police procedurals such as Kaakha Kaakha, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, and Yennai Arindhaal. As an actor, he frequently portrays police officers, including in his forthcoming Malayalam film, Bazooka. However, it has been ten years since he last directed a true police procedural, a gap he attributes to not focusing on writing stories within that genre.
Gautham Vasudev Menon likes the police procedural genre, but...
While Gautham Vasudev Menon has an affinity for police procedurals, he acknowledges that he is currently not in the right creative mindset to pursue one. Instead, he expresses a desire to explore love stories, a genre he believes has become increasingly rare. He is presently developing a project in the romantic drama category, which may serve as his next directorial venture. Although he does not completely dismiss the idea of returning to cop narratives, he emphasizes the necessity of finding the right inspiration to create one.
Describing himself as a reluctant actor, Gautham reveals that his decision to portray ACP Benjamin Joshua in Bazooka was significantly influenced by the presence of Malayalam superstar Mammootty in the lead role. Although he occasionally turns down acting opportunities, he felt compelled to accept this project directed by debutant Deeno Dennis, primarily to share the screen with Mammootty.

In addition to his admiration for the story, Gautham viewed the project as a challenge due to its use of live sound during filming. Despite not being fluent in Malayalam, he managed to engage in substantial dialogue with Mammootty, requiring only minor adjustments during dubbing. Bazooka is one of three Vishu releases in Malayalam and, according to Gautham, is a heist film that incorporates a gaming element.
Bazooka features a cast that includes Siddarth Bharathan, Jagadish, Babu Antony, Neeta Pillai, Gayathri Iyer, Divya Pillai, and Shine Tom Chacko, among others. This film marks Mammootty's second release of the year. His previous appearance was in Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, directed by Gautham, which garnered mixed reviews, similar to those received by Turbo. In contrast, Bramayugam was positively received in 2024, following the successes of Kaathal The Core and Kannur Squad in 2023.
