More than three years have passed since Basil Joseph last took on a role behind the camera. During this time, the filmmaker known for Minnal Murali has seen a significant rise in his acting career, accumulating credits in at least 16 films, encompassing both leading and supporting roles. His upcoming project, Maranamass, which marks his third release of the year, is set to hit theaters on April 10. In the course of promoting the film, the actor-director was inquired about how he manages his dual roles. He mentioned that he plans to take a hiatus from acting to concentrate on filmmaking once more.

Basil Joseph on his growing brand as an actor

With my growing profile as an actor, it has become increasingly challenging to balance my roles in acting and directing. Previously, I focused more on directing, with acting being a secondary pursuit. However, as my acting career gains momentum and my films receive more attention, managing both roles has become quite difficult. This realization has led me to consider returning to the learning process, which is more feasible in the role of a director, where I can control routines and timelines. As an actor, the responsibilities I carry leave me with little creative space and time to direct, he shared during his appearance on the Nona Prince podcast.

Basil further explains that the films he aims to create as a director are ambitious and grand in scale and narrative, requiring significant time for writing and planning, among other preparations. As he reportedly works towards directing either Mohanlal or Mammootty, he acknowledges that he cannot control the schedules of the actors he envisions. He believes he must adjust his timelines as an actor to find a balance between the two roles. "I think there should be a separation between the two—when you are acting, you cannot direct, and vice versa," he states.

Basil notes that following the success of films such as PonMan, he has received numerous offers from prominent filmmakers for acting roles, which has compelled him to make challenging decisions regarding his priorities. "I have had to make tough choices, but fortunately, both directing and acting are in a favorable position," he remarks.
