The recent trend of incorporating animated or endearing sidekicks for protagonists aims to attract young audiences, as exemplified by characters like Bujji in Kalki 2898 AD and Grogu in The Mandalorian. The creators of Mohanlal’s directorial debut, Barroz: Guardian of Treasures, have embraced this approach as well. In the film, the celebrated actor will portray the lead role alongside his animated companion, Voodoo.

In a recent interview, Mohanlal discussed the difficulties encountered in bringing this 3D children's fantasy to life and the importance of assembling the right team to realize his vision. He emphasized that he does not take sole credit for the film, instead acknowledging the contributions of cinematographer Santosh Sivan, creative director TK Rajeev Kumar, and the rest of the crew for achieving what he described as a challenging feat.

Mohanlal to be seen as an octopus in Barroz

Mohanlal will portray an octopus in Barroz. He shared with Galatta Plus, “It is essential to have talented individuals on board. I was fortunate to work with passionate people who developed a genuine affection for the film. This affection is evident in the final product. We have an animated character, Voodoo, and the VFX supervisor expressed the challenge of creating an animated figure that would harmonize with a distinguished actor like myself, ensuring it complements my emotions and dialogue.” The visual effects for the film were produced by Labyrinth Studios.

Mohanlal also praised the exceptional work of the team, noting that Barroz features an underwater animated sequence involving the character Isabella (Maya Rao West). He described it as a musical segment that includes fish, seahorses, and turtles, in which he performs as an octopus. “Water plays a significant role in this film,” he added.

Mohanlal shares insights into the narrative of Barroz

He elaborated that the film commences and concludes with a Fado song. "Barroz is rooted in a Portuguese tale. Fado songs, characterized by their melancholic tone, are traditional Portuguese folk melodies that evoke themes of the sea. They express feelings of yearning and fidelity; similarly, Barroz embodies these themes, focusing on the protagonist's patience and dedication to his master. These elements gradually coalesced into the story."

The film Barroz is set to premiere in theaters in Malayalam on December 25, followed by releases in other languages the following day.
