The second season of the musical romantic drama Bandish Bandits has finally arrived, almost four years after the first season premiered. Director and creator Anand Tiwari can't help but grin when he reflects on this significant delay. In a recent exclusive interview with an online outlet before the release of season 2, he discussed how the new season came to be, why it took so long, and the departure of composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy from the project.
The four-year break between the two seasons.
Bandish Bandits made its debut on Amazon Prime Video in 2020, and the long-awaited second season dropped on December 12 this year. Reflecting on the four-year gap, Anand jokes, "We spent 2.5 years writing season 1, but for season 2, we wrapped it up in just 1.5 years. So, we actually improved!" He goes on to say, "Writing this show is quite challenging because it’s not just about the drama or a love story between two people from different backgrounds. Since music is a huge part of it and I’m not a musician myself, we rely on musical experts to guide us."
The series follows the journey of two musicians, played by Ritwik Bhowmik and Shreya Chaudhary, who come from completely different backgrounds and fall in love. With music being such a central theme, how does someone without a musical background tackle this? Anand explains, "It’s all about having a clear understanding of the message you want to convey. Through my experiences in directing and acting, I’ve learned that I need to be honest about what I know. There are plenty of talented people out there who are experts in their fields. As a creator, I don’t have to know everything, but I do need to surround myself with knowledgeable individuals."
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy won't be coming back.
In the first season, the music was a hit thanks to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, but they didn’t work on any of the 17 tracks in season 2. Anand mentioned, "Season 1 had Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, but for season 2, we had Akashdeep as our musical supervisor, with their support. I felt really secure because we had a great team that understood our vision, not just for the music but also for cinematography, costumes, and production design. It was a collaborative effort that made everything come together."
You can catch Bandish Bandits streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
