BAFTAs 2025: India's All We Imagine As Light Falls Short Against Emilia Perez
26 days ago | 5 Views
At the BAFTA Awards held on Sunday evening, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish musical, Emilia Pérez, secured the award for Best Film Not in the English Language, despite the controversy surrounding lead actor Karla Sofía Gascón’s previously offensive tweets. Consequently, India’s All We Imagine As Light left the ceremony without any accolades.
Payal Kapadia’s film was nominated alongside Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Kneecap, and The Seed of the Sacred Fig. This marks a second significant disappointment for Kapadia and India, following last month’s omission at the Golden Globes, where Emilia Pérez also triumphed.
Gascón has largely been absent from the awards circuit due to a considerable backlash on social media that erupted last month when her past racist and xenophobic tweets resurfaced. Although she did not attend the ceremony, the director acknowledged her in his acceptance speech, sending her a kiss.
"Most importantly, I wish to express my gratitude to the remarkable artists who made this film a reality and who are present with us tonight," he stated. "My dear Zoë, my dear Selena, Giorgini, Paul, Juliet, Camille, Clément, Julia, and your team—along with you, my dear Karla Sofía, to whom I send a kiss. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together. Long live Emilia Pérez!”
Despite the setback, All We Imagine As Light has received considerable acclaim, making a significant impact in the international film arena.
All We Imagine As Light, which became the first Indian film to win the esteemed Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, has been lauded for its evocative narrative and compelling performances.
The film features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, and it tells the touching story of a troubled nurse and her young roommate as they navigate their desires during a visit to a coastal town.
As an official Indo-French co-production, it represents a notable achievement in international cinema, with its nomination for the Critics Choice Awards being a proud moment for Indian audiences.
