The next big event leading up to the Oscars 2025 is the 78th British Academy Film Awards, or the BAFTAs for short. Mark your calendars for February 16, 2025, because London's Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Centre will be the place to be for this exciting night. It's all about celebrating the top films from both the UK and around the world from 2024.

Streaming and hosting live events

David Tennant is back to host the event for the second year in a row! You can catch the live stream on various global platforms, including Lionsgate Play (OTTplay Premium) in India. Tune in to start streaming the awards at 11:30 PM on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

This year, a brand new award is being introduced to honor the top films that resonate with both kids and families. This addition comes after the Best Casting category was introduced in 2020, marking the only new category at the EE BAFTA Film Awards in the last five years. The new award will highlight the vital creative efforts from the children's media sector, focusing specifically on family and children's films, just like in 2023.

On January 3, 2025, the BAFTA longlists were announced. Then, on January 15, 2025, nominees were revealed by Mia McKenna-Bruce, who won the 2024 EE Rising Star Award, alongside Will Sharpe, a BAFTA TV Award winner. Earlier, on January 7, 2025, the candidates for the EE Rising Star Award were shared, celebrating the 20th anniversary of this category, which is determined by public votes. Letitia Wright, the 2019 winner, and James McAvoy, the first-ever winner, will present this category.

Most nominated movies

On February 16, 2025, the winners will be announced. Leading the pack with 15 nominations is the Spanish-language French musical crime film Emilia Pérez, closely followed by Conclave with 14 nominations. The films The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, and The Substance each snagged 11 nominations. Emilia Pérez's 13 nominations tie the record set by three films in one year—Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Oppenheimer—as well as All Quiet on the Western Front in 2022, which was also up for Best Film at the BAFTAs. Conclave takes the lead with the most nominations at 12, while Emilia Pérez has 11 and The Brutalist has 9.

This year's BAFTA Film Awards nominations showcase a diverse mix of genres, featuring musicals like A Complete Unknown, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked, historical dramas such as Blitz and The Brutalist, and high-octane action flicks like Dune: Part Two and Gladiator II. Horror films like Heretic, Nosferatu, and The Substance also made the cut with nominations.

Following Alfonso Cuarón's impressive six wins for Roma in 2019, Sean Baker, the writer-director of Anora, snagged five nominations (Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Casting, and Best Editing), making him the second most nominated individual at a single ceremony. Meanwhile, English filmmaker Rich Peppiatt, with his four nominations for the Irish comedy-drama Kneecap, has now outdone Stephen Daldry (three nominations for Billy Elliot) as the most nominated debut director ever.

India at the BAFTAs

In the category for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer, we've got Monkey Man, directed by Dev Patel, up against Santosh, which was both written and directed by Sandhya Suri, with James Bowsher and Balthazar de Ganay handling production. Karan Kandhari, who wrote and directed Sister Midnight, is also in the mix.

On top of that, Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine as Light is nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language.
